It was fucking embarrassing. The construction of the Taj drained the Mughal treasuries as they had to import materials from China and Arabia. When Shah Jahan was on his death bad, the next Mughal Emperor (his son Aurangzeb) had to put in austerity measures and also jizya (tax on non-Muslims) causing rebellion across the country, finally leading to the breaking of Mughal Empire by the Marathas in 1674. The Mughals, who were now unprepared for an invasion from Persia kept fighting with the Maratha Confederate States, until 1739 when Persia invaded India and sacked Delhi. The Mughals became only figureheads by 1758, when the Marathas were at their peak.
The Marathas now battled the British defeating them in the first Anglo-Maratha war, and getting defeated in the third in 1814. Due to the nature of the Maratha Confederacy (because it was never centralized), the Confederacy was never as strong as the Mughal Empire.
In short, the construction of the Taj Mahal was pretty much responsible for the colonization of India.
