Problems with colonizing Mars:
1) Lack of appreciable atmosphere
2) Lack of magnetosphere
3) Low gravity, which would cause long-term birth defects and bone density deficiencies in colonists
4) Intermittent exposure to high levels of solar and cosmic radiation
5) Martian soil lacks specific minerals and enzymes required for plant life which would have to be imported or manufactured on-site in some currently unknown fashion
6) Little real economic value compared to asteroid development (easily accessed minerals vs minerals which will require decades of exploration to discover)
7) Extensive development costs to create habitable structures and launch/recovery facilities vs exceedingly cheap development costs for creating habitable structures and launch/recovery facilities in microgravity orbital environments (space colonies)

Benefits of colonizing Mars:
1) Lots of open unclaimed land
2) Scientific research

Basically, if you're Space Company A, and you have $10 billion to blow either mining asteroids for precious metals and using the materials to build habitable space structures for resale, thus turning that $10 billion into $100+ billion, or using that $10 billion to colonize an economically unimportant cold dustball, you're going to choose the asteroids. You'd also have to create a massive amount of infrastructure to support either endeavor, but the asteroid development would provide returns within the span of a decade vs several decades by settling Mars. The possible (probable) economic value of a single mined metal-rich asteroid is so high that it could potentially crash the metals market on Earth, but there's no such guaranteed returns on investment like that from Mars. Colonizing Mars is something we would do a century or two AFTER having large numbers of orbital colonies and manufacturing facilities already in space that could support it.
