SOCOM and the other ultra high speed roles are definitely not a joke however. If you want a military career like the movies and you're truly prepared to embrace the suck, then look into that. Ranger units, for instance, are unquestionably professional and lethal. Divers, Sappers, fighter pilots, etc. The real combat roles are highly trained and effective.

It would be for the better. The military is undeniably filled with deep state actors planted there since the Clinton administration and now Obama's. They see the military as being this humanitarian advertising agency for liberal social policy. Becoming top brass in the post-Cold War era was based entirely on your politics. The War on Terrorism has been fought mainly by small highly trained units who exist outside the larger force. The supporting structures have been able to get by due to the might of American funds but they haven't been functioning as close to optimal as they should be.

So basically Trump's agenda for the military is to bring the larger force back to 1980s style readiness for potential large scale war with a "near peer" adversary, where daily casualties would equal the total dead in 9/11 on a daily basis. i.e Iran, North Korea, or even Russia and China.

Roles of the US military in order of priority:

1) Create demand for the defense industry.
2) Serve as guinea pig for various experminets, mainly social engineering.
3) Improve unemployment statistics.
4) Virtue signalling platform.
5) Be referred to for "conservatives" wanting more votes.
6) A convenient way to transfer foreign financial aid.
7) Bomb stuff for propaganda purposes whenever the CIA fucks up.

It offers more stability and pay than most other entry level jobs. When you look at the incentives it provides, it's not that bad of a deal. 4 years and ta-da, school, health insurance, housing and on a personal level you're physically fit (assuming you went Army or Marines) and much more equipped to deal with bullshit being flung at you in the real world.

I think a lot of the bitterness towards joining the military here is just sour grapes from young people who are too fat, medicated, and lazy, or too spineless to deal with authority to making joining an option for them in the first place. Only about 30 percent of the eligible military age range is capable of making it through MEPS in the first place. The vast majority of millenials I know are constantly self-pitying for their depression, asthma or what have you. Many would probably kill themselves in the first week if they were forced to join because they have no resilience.

By and large, the majority of Americans respect the military for the service they provide. Potential spouses are attracted to them because they're usually disciplined, healthy, and financially independent. Employers like them for these same reasons.

As someone who lives and works as a cop in a city with a large military population (Colorado Springs), I can tell you that the military is an absolute joke.
