Both signify a clan or people, and are often used interchangeably (ἔθνος and γένος) in Herodotus. I'd love to see sources you have that argue "genos" should be properly defined in the modern biological sense of "race". That would be interesting.

If you will turn to Liddell and Scott you will see that the very place where they remark that "genos" is a species of "ethnos" involves a quotation from Herodotus himself.
"after Hom., nation, people, τὸ Μηδιkὸν ἔ. (γένος being a subdivision of ἔθνος) Hdt.1.101"
The passage:
"Deioces, then, united the Median nation by itself and ruled it. The Median tribes are these: the Busae, the Paretaceni, the Struchates, the Arizanti, the Budii, the Magi. Their tribes are this many."
"Δηιόkης μέν νυν τὸ Μηδιkὸν ἔθνος συνέστρεψε μοῦνον kαὶ τοῦτον ἦρξε: ἔστι δὲ Μήδων τοσάδε γένεα, Βοῦσαι Παρηταkηνοὶ Στρούχατες Ἀριζαντοὶ Βούδιοι Μάγοι. γένεα μὲν δὴ Μήδων ἐστὶ τοσάδε."
If we are to take the word race as meaning physical descent than genos meant race.
And yet the source I posted here for you mentions this, and the fact that Herodotus then reverses the hierarchy between ethnos and genos, using them interchangeably, akin to the use of "house" and "home" being dependent on context for shades of meaning. Its well known that Herodotus (as well as other Greek writers) use these words interchangeably. They aren't absolutely distinct, sorry.

So without having read it myself it seems to support my point of view and not your own.

What does that have to do with ethnicity? Ethnicity doesn't matter as far as your physical appearance goes. Aryan physical features (neoteny, ectomorphy, high digit ratio, light features, etc) exist independent of ethnicity.

I just logged in with my university credentials and reviewed the article itself. It supports my point of view as I predicted from Susan Lape's remark. "An ethnos is a group viewed as a geographical, political, or cultural entity, often in relation to the time of the narrative context; genos is such a group viewed as united by birth."

He says that ethnos is sometimes a subdivision of genos and sometimes the contrary but that nevertheless ethnos refers to an entity as geographical, political, or cultural, and genos as related by birth. I not only quoted Jones' exact words but those of a scholar quoting Jones to substantiate exactly that.

I'm pretty sure your original point was that the two words had an absolute distinction, and the OP image involved mistranslation. My reply was that ancient sources are contradictory on that matter. Its never a good approach to treat ancient vernacular like it was subject to strict classification. They didn't have dictionaries in the ancient world, just the protean instability of usage, and we have to sort through that ambiguity when we "interpret" their meanings.

He describes that difference SPECIFICALLY on the first page a akin to the difference in usage between the words "house" and "home". The shades of meaning are therefore less profound than the difference in spelling between the two words, ie, its not a "mistranslation".
