A few years ago I worked at walmart for a bit and had to work on black friday. This was back when it started at midnight on Friday instead of on thanksgiving.

Shit sucked, but I live in a white town so nothing interesting ever happened.

I did 16 hours in 24 hours at K-mart two years in a row. Second year I was loss prevention and ate microwaved thanksgiving and watched cameras. Nobody came to K-Mart so nobody stole anything, was comfy.

You get stuck in the "no experience for entry level yet no money or time for education" loop. Eventually all you really have extensive experience with leads you to Walmart because it's the only or primary "game" in town.

what did your duties entail as loss prevention? if you saw someone stealing, were you allowed to tackle them?

Can't speak for him but I've done it other places & it varies, every chain has their own policies. Some wanted you chasing them on foot, others you were just running cameras, gathering proof & license numbers & then calling in the cops to deal.

I just watched cameras. I was still being trained, so I couldn't confront anyone but they actually put me in by myself anyway for a few hours. Usually I was just being extra eyes for one of the other guys until I got fully certified, they laid off the entire LP department a month after I got that though and only ever stopped a 12 year old black kid stealing a phone charger.

The people who got training were able to tell people they needed to come inside to our holding room but if they wanted to run we couldn't stop them.

I'm going to bed right now so I can be up for my shift that's starting at 12:30. My co-worker texted me saying that he drove by the store and someone is already in line.

I only have a GED. Was easy to get but I'm a book fag. Dropped in 8th grade, was held back twice for fighting and said fuck it.
4 years military training (OJT) and bam... shit loads of jobs open up in the civilian world.
Lots of options. Welders I work around make lots and get a lot of respect but they're real dealer boiler makers with R stamps not scrub MIG jockies (as an example).

EE and EET has become a pipeline for new hires lately. Getting hard to find guys off the street that know enough to pass the entrance tests. Shame. I blame High schools for not offering trade pipelines anymore. Fucking 18 year olds that've never heard of ohms law? wtf.

Massive throngs of humanity, nobody really wants to be there, everyone's in a shitty mood, hour long line waits all fucking day, couple hours of cleanup if you're unfortunate enough to close.
Meanwhile if you work from Oct or so you get to hear THE SAME FUCKING 15 OR SO CHRISTMAS SONGS on repeat for 12 hours or so a day, from october to january.

I've never been able to physically read a book and it only through the magic of audiobooks have I been exposed to literature.

Everyone needs a good plumber, and you can make some serious bank if you want to do a 24hr emergency service. Replacing a water heater could pay up to maybe $500 for literally 2 hrs of work. The worse is having to break up concrete slabs and water lines, but it all pays. plumbing is far more easier now than back in the day with all the new material that;s been introduced. Unless it suddenly got a lot worse in the last couple of years since I quit retail, 2011 was the last year it was really bad. I remember working at Walmart in 2011, and people literally rioting and one of the assistant manager's screaming over the intercom that they were going to shut down the store unless people stopped chimping out. After 2011 everything was became so strictly organized with massive queues, tickets, and more security everywhere. There was no real chimping out, or opportunities to.

Black Friday was never the worst day to work either. It was always funny as fuck, all of the people going absolutely insane and I'm just standing there with a dead look on my face trying not to laugh.
Memorial Day Weekend is the shittiest time to work retail, followed up by the weekend before Christmas. On Memorial Day weekend its almost as fucking busy as Black Friday, and while on black friday people are expecting to have to deal with people chimping out, massive crowds, not getting everything, and waiting forever, no one expects that on Memorial Day Weekend, and the customers are so fucking obnoxious when everything goes wrong in their plans for the holiday weekend.
