Too little, too late. Maybe in the 90s we could have tinkered with the mechanics of the republic. At this point the whole thing is rotted and will have to be replaced. There's no sense anymore trying to break the party duopoly because Left vs Right is two big tent factions. The spirit of 3rd parties is currently being played out within the big tents. Ultimately, the Democratic and Republican parties will morph into aggressively different visions for America. Its winner-take-all and the prize is rebooting the whole country with new rules

We have a proportional system in our primary elections.
Maintaining such a system further on would only serve to split votes and give the advantage to rich leftists.
This is why European countries are having major issues with immigration. Despite having multiple parties, those parties still either support one side or another once they are in office. It was hard for Trump to win the election. It's impossible in Europe.

In the republican primaries we had 16 candidates, one of them being Trump.
Each of these candidates represents something different within the right just like multiple right wing parties.
One of them is chosen to represent the right wing (republicans) in whatever way they choose.
That what I mean. Maintaining so many parties all the way to office would just turn us into Europe.
