Monarchies in general are shit. I used to be a monarchist until I realized that the process of centralization that culminated in the liberal revolutions began under kings who weaponized the rootless bourgeoisie to usurp the powers of the aristocracy, the church, and the traditional parliaments.
What happened in the 1789 is that the bureaucracy that the monarchs created to better administer their dominions revolted against them, realizing that they could have even more power without the king overruling them. My only sympathy for Louis XVI is because he wasn't actually very much at fault, it should have been Louis XIV losing his head (but then they wouldn't never do that, he was too strong). The only monarchists I still admire are the Spanish Carlists, but then, they never had power anyway.
Now, I can't say I would identify as a "Republican" if I were French, since this term has a certain connotation of leftism and secularism I despise, but I wouldn't be a devout monarchist either, fuck these guys.
