Don't get me wrong, they pay very generously - enough to have own apartment and car in mid-20s. But what's the point of this? This monkey job doesn't move the mankind forward. It is only a wasted effort and after my death there will be nothing to remind of my work. The same fate as most of humans have on this damn planet.

I'm talking about other planets and their moons in the system. Humanity haven't colonized any of them. There were plans for lunar bases made by US and USSR, and they are abandoned now. Musk now wants base on Mars, but will he do it? That needs a nation's effort (if not international), not a single wealthy enthusiast. Another countries and entities capable of such thing are currently busy with wars (Russia, Ukraine), illegal immigration (EU) or simply filling pockets of their elites (China, Brazil, India).
We don't need colony on Antarctica by the same reason we don't need it in the middle of Sahara desert. Mars or Jupiter's moons though is another thing. You will have "backup" of humanity in case if something happens on Earth. And also that's a first step to another goal - finding and colonizing another habitable planet.

Two telescopes will be launched in the coming years. James Webb Space Telescope is one of them. But unfortunately we will never reach a potentially habitable planet outside of our home system using rockets+chemical propellant.
