It arguable if it was founded as a christian nation at all, but I will concede that was the default position then so they weren't really thinking in other terms. That aside religious freedom was important to the founding fathers, and furthermore the freedom to adjust with changing times. The last thing the founding fathers wanted was for what they said to be etched in stone and followed without question centuries later.
Pretty sure Franklin would be an atheist if born in modern times, may very well have been during his own time.

The greatest strength of the founding fathers was also their downfall: how outlandishly smart they were. They knew to be crystal clear in most regards, yet in other matters they took their own intelligence for granted and weren't specific enoug. Give the Jew a tiny crack and it will make a fissure. Isn't that basically just because of the large amount of Jewish influence in the US? If there were no Jews, America would have been a very different place. It would have probably stayed largely isolationist and who knows what else could have happened.
