Dark matter is really something like a placeholder for physics we can't observe/model/understand. IE we know that are other models are pretty damn good but not perfect, and some of the ways they aren't perfect get lumped into something like this.
That also provides an open door for speculation, some interesting thoughts out there around how it may interact with complex systems such as consciousness or global psychology. Perhaps the Gods do leave a footprint.
