I have thought about this problem before. Like if I was a witness to a mass shooting and had a gun, of course you would want to take the dude out before he can harm more people. But the trouble is there is almost no way to make it clear to all bystanders and especially the police that you aren't the shooter. You'd have to take the guy out quick, drop the weapon/put it away and immediately announce your intention... But the probability of it working out that way is somewhat low, it's such a precarious situation no matter how you slice it. Still, none of this changes the fact that I am unwilling to support relinquishing our constitutionally instantiated right to bear arms
