Let's say the Russians magically gain the ability to be able to force project to the levels necessary for invasion to occur. They would have to first manage to make it through the US Atlantic and Pacific fleet. Second, they would have to be able to establish and maintain footholds in strategic areas of the country on the coast, which is swarming with military bases, national guard units, and pissed off guerillas who will not abide by any convention. If, and only if they are able to do all of that, they would have to have enough strength left to conquer and occupy a massive swath of land that is also swarming with military bases, national guard units, and pissed of guerillas. This is not even mentioning the US units stationed abroad that will be put into a position to retaliate against the Russians. Even with the magical ability to force project the Russians would be strained to the point of breaking. There is a reason the Russians have had a mainly defensive strategic doctrine for the past 5 or so decades.

Watching them trying to take and hold Appalachia and the South would be fun though.

As of now, Russia has no feasible way to land significant troops in the lower 48, and probably not in Hawaii, either. Far eastern Alaska is the only feasible place for a landing, and unless the US navy has been annihilated, there's no reason to believe they'd be able to land more than a few thousand troops before US naval and air power overwhelmed them. So if Russia is invading the mainland, the US military must either have already been defeated or it will be busy with an ongoing civil war. That leads back to what the fuck is going on with the government.
