I have aspergers. Even if I can communicate with others, it isn't a natural process, more of a learned one where I plan ahead and think about how not to blow the person off or seem rude. The downside is I never make any real friends, and have no relationship or experience. Take a typical high school with 800 kids, at least 20 of them are going to speds.
Hell, I went to high school in a small ass town with 80 kids and there were 2 kids who were autistic.
1/40 sounds about right, at least anecdotally. However, being autistic isn't a death sentence, or even a social life death sentence, a lot of people who are autistic grow out of it or learn to keep it under control. The 1/40 might be diagnosed when they're young, but that number might change with the right therapy.
It's a concern, but the sky isn't falling.
