A reminder that anyone with any sense will carry around in the very least bearspray, but ideally a shotgun loaded with slugs when spending any time in bear country. There are parts of the Canadian north where they will not let vistors explore unless they are armed. Usually against polar bears. My great grandfather walked thought hundreds of KM of boreal forest to see the Polar Bears in Churchill Manitoba years ago.
In my experiences though, bears are timid and will usually flee humans who are being noisy or disputive, the exception being when they are trying to defend their food or trying to defend their young. I have encountered Bears a few times in the woods, usually the best course of action is to yell at them and tell them to fuck off. Some of the hippies on the west coast utilize handdrums to scare the bears off and that works surprisingly well.
Grolar/Pizzly bears are a whole different beast.
