Most defenders or people trying to hype a show will use that as a crutch for positive ratings because when ever shit like this comes out the initial viewership is high.
You have movies, books, albums that get this same effect and it's due to novelty and curiosity. People watched the first few episodes to see the changes and they're falling off because there's nothing to keep them coming back.

I mean you can clearly see the disparity between the reviews of the actually viewers and the "professional critics". It's pretty clear that no publication wants this season to fail for pretty obvious reasons. Regardless anything after David Tennant was the big trash so this is just the final nail.
