I really have no idea, I didn't follow Canadian or any politics until this year. All I know is that he was a shit leader.

I think part of it is because Canadians for years have psychologically engrained that smug moral superiority relative to the United States. Naturally this was exploited during the liberal-progressive ramp up in the United States, of course Canadians in the psychologically engrained notion of moral superiority jumped onto the SJW-liberal progressive bandwagon.

I would also blame it however on the passivity and weakness of individuals where they are tempted to choose an easier ideological choice in this case.
