There should be no federal lands out west. That land should belong to the states, then either leased or purchased by the feds, using immanent domain if necessary. But in this case a pressing need would have to be demonstrated. It's been a while since I read about this, but pre civil war the US just wanted to create states to limit the power of southern states and created the western states as husks - not owning their own land. There was that federal park that the left got up in arms when Trump downsized it by like 90% and acted like he was destroying some sacred national history but really Obama had created it like a year before leaving office. There was some other incident I remember where BLM was trying to take land and the county sheriff stood up to them. He had the land owner's backs. He said straight out in a press conference that if the feds try to come and forcefully take it that he will deputize every man in the county and fight them.
