Actually it was a European Christian who encouraged it because he thought it would prevent/lower masturbation and sexual urges. The trend spread in Europe and then in the US. I can't find the source right now but I remember reading how during the time of WWII, somewhere between a third and half of all men were circumcised. People slowly stopped doing it in Europe but it was upheld in the US, I believe it was because American Christians back then, and still today, are much more apprehensive when it comes to masturbation, sex etc. and overall take those aspects of religion more seriously. So the reason that a lot still do it in the US today is because "well I was, so when asked at the hospital I guess I'll have my son circumcised as well" or something like that. I'd imagine the trend will follow as it has in Europe and that American numbers will drop, same as is happening in South Korea for example.

Besides circumcision rates, if you think about it it is really stupid to do something for the sole reason that everyone else is doing it.
