It goes in both directions - The Beagle was a military ship on a mission that happened to have a biologist signed aboard, the Apollo moon missions greatly aided our development of ICBMs. To dissociate science from war removes one of it's main drivers.

Most of them--if they're in a STEM field at all--are just lab rats with stupid coats and goggles. They don't understand that science works with models that are approximations to the truth, but inherently are prone to errors and uncertainty. They also underestimate the power of group dynamics and how easy scientists can trick themselves into believing unscientific things. When it comes to the human affairs, it's easy to come up with ideology-conforming models and bend data until they seem to prove their points, provided you don't look deeper. As wrote, it's become a fetish and the goal isn't truth or applicability but mutual reassurance to be on the right side (see all the smug comics they identify with); and as others mentioned here, they refuse to even look at uncomfortable ideas or facts (which is perhaps the main joke as science often works with counter-intuitive models).
