thoughts on volunteering with the big brother big sister foundation?
With recent events of my grandpa passing away and soon to be graduating from a community college.
I had a sense of closure of my fuck ups and mistakes in childhood. It was time time to grow up and carry the torch.
I realized my parents helped me to get through the worst years of my life in grade school. Weren't for them I'd be in a much worse spot
I thought maybe I could give advice and be a friend to someone who went through what i did but has no one to say it to.
im 22 and still living with my parents so I dont know if I should wait until I get settled first.

Yes. Volunteering is a good idea. I didn't work with big brother big sister, but I did volunteer work with a few foster kids in Camden. It was nice, but I felt pretty awful listening to a lot of them talk about home life. Lots of them are genuine good kids, I did mostly tutoring but I also spent quality time mostly talking to them, just always try to be understanding if it's a kid from a really bad place. Try to read up on mental disorders, and how to talk to someone w/ them especially kids they're not as easy to talk to as one would think.

I agree with the always being understanding part. I always felt uncomfortable when principles, counselors, and teachers would talk to me when I was in trouble.

one of my main questions is if I should wait until I am a little older. On the flip side I think me being younger and college age (22) maybe I can better connect with a kid in middleschool/highschool. maybe I'll be seen as a peer that undertsands what it means to grow up in the 21st century.?

What do you do in the program? Are you a big? What was screening like? Was meeting your little awkward? Scary? Why did you join to begin with? How did it help you? How did it help the little?

Most volunteers are just Bigs, yeah.
Screening was very basic questions. Don't be creepy or a criminal and you'll be okay.
I joined in order to fufill a volunteer requirement at college, but I ended up really loving it.
It's helped me get a lot more active. My kid loves to just do shit, so we're always at the park, at a trampoline play place, or doing something. It also helps me make sure my car is always cleaned out.
Apparently it's helped him dramatically. Both his mom and our program coordinator agree he's changed tenfold for the better and is on track in his life. It's been great for everyone.
The younger you are the more you'll connect with him. You're a mentor, yeah, but also a brother.

Thats very reassuring, maybe I'll start next fall semester. now when you say Don't be creepy or a criminal and you'll be okay...Is it ok to explain my bad school behavior as a teen for the person interviewing to understand that I sympathize with children who are disobedient?

I'm not comfortable admitting such acts and events but if it better pairs me with a little buddy I'd be willing to step out my comfort zone, as a matter of fact even thinking of joining is out of comfort zone but I am still interested

One more question before I go to bed. How do I explain to my family that I want to join such a program with out looking like one of those save the children/earth people. I love my parents but my dad may convince me not to go pic somewhat related
