You'll pretty much never see any of the 'down on their luck' types of people on the street, save for the occasional Big Issue seller. Not only are most of them busying themselves with unfucking their situation, but almost all of them have this strong self-consciousness about their situation, and try to get themselves off the dole and independent as soon as possible. Even the majority of the 'too mentally ill to work' are sheltered in some form or another these days.

The folk you actually see begging for cash are pretty much always the ones who aren't even trying to get jobs and are more than happy to guilt passers-by into giving them handouts to feed their various habits (usually cigarettes more than anything serious). They're completely shameless about their entitlement to other people's money, and do the bare minimum to keep getting some kind of benefits or tax-paid housing without actually doing any work. Fuck 'em, I hope they get trenchfoot following people to the ATM.

Keep the asylums open. Make panhandling illegal. Strict loitering and vagrancy laws in major public areas.

Other than that, you’re good. The beauty part of this country is you can be homeless and live a full life. Did it for a few years until i met my wife. Never stole, never begged. Saw a lot of the country.

There's prob a way to house them and feed them and have it be cost neutral by getting them to work even if they're not very productive. Put them in a hostel like facility with 12 beds to a room. Even if it's not cost neutral it could outweigh the costs of having them on the streets and you don't have to deal with them out there as well

The first problem here isn't even the cost. The first problem is they are overwhelmingly mentally ill and dropped out of society by choice. There is no effective way to force them back in.

Nah, they are homeless because they really do not give a fuck about their lives in the slightest. You can give them all the homes in the world and they will be right back on a corner begging an hour or two later. They don't care about anything buy getting money to go get high.

Two years ago I gave a homeless guy a full thanksgiving dinner, all the trimmings. He was sleeping by the dumpster by my building. He ate some of the food and littered all the plates and Tupperware and paper all over. He was sleeping next to the dumpster but still went out of his way to fucking make a huge mess everywhere.

All homeless are selfish pieces of shit, do not let anyone fool you. They don't give a fuck about anything but themselves. They can all die.

It really comes down to the culture of the place. Japan had some of the coolest homeless I'd ever seen, many would refuse booze and many chose the lifestyle. In San Diego, they were mostly drug addicts pushing drugs for dealers. In my home of Ohio, they're mostly opiate addicts or crazies.

I took care of a homeless woman one evening (food/shower/shelter) in Florida and she didn't steal a thing - crack addict too. Probably the exception rather than the norm.
