I think it's their culture that promotes this, as a way to cope with the high stress. I think Korea finally feels like it has a chance to prove itself to the world, and that's what it's doing pretty good on now, but it's coming at a pretty high cost, and I don't envy the society for that. my suburb has a lot chinese from shanghai and they tend to be pretty short. when i go to a nearby korean suburb they appear a lot taller on average. at one korean restaurant i go to there is a girl who works there who is giant.
