The washington consensus, neoliberalism, globalization, however you want to call it, the western world's current condition is mostly a consequence of the capitalist financial elite more and more operating at a level above the sovereign state (making whatever laws they pass ineffective on any level that actually matters: economic) so that they can proceed with their international ambitions. For them, it's completely inevitable because that's where they put their money. This was a huge investment and a huge risk for many of them. And they chose to do it together. For many of them, there is no going back. It is inconceivable to abandon their current plans. For ordinary people, they can think of other ways to deal with the problems. Guillotines must be on people's minds more and more.
