They're useful as a litmus test for how serious people are about upholding gun rights and they're useful as a barrier to buy time. Democrats have been concentrating anti gun rights efforts on bump stocks for about the past year. Now that they're banned they'll move onto infringing gun rights in other ways. Bump stocks could have been something they could have wasted years of money and effort on banning. But Trump just gave it to them for free.

I agree that they’re a novelty, but the way the ATF changed the definition of a machine gun to include these, it is arguable that anything that “increases the rate of fire” could be up for a ban in the future, including a regular trigger that allows the user to rapid-fire.

Out of curiosity, what is this board's opinion on the sawed-off shotgun ban? That's a federal restriction on firearms, with the justification that it's taking a normal weapon, and making it more likely to have significant collateral damage.
You could make the argument that the reduced accuracy from a bump stock gives it similar properties. You're more likely to hit something you're not trying to with both weapons, and the weapon without the modification is more suited to both self defense and hobbyist use.

That's not the justification for it though. The justification I have always seen is that a short barreled weapon is seen as more concealable, gangsterish, and as something criminals in general did. Gun laws here have alway been written by people who get their understanding of firearms from mass media and not actual experience. Sawing off a shotgun barrel can increase the spread because you would be sawing off the choke, but chokes vary on shotguns anyway and you could always have the barrel rethreaded.

This is the only way to get the case for machine gun rights to the supreme court which will rule that machine guns are constitutionally protected.

It's a retarded ban based off of Hollywood beliefs on gun knowledge. You won't get any spread with short barrel shotguns indoors which is the reason to have for using one for.

The utility of short barrel shotsguns is that shotguns are the cheapest kind of guns. They're a poor man's pistol for home defence and self defence. You can use them quicker and easier indoors and in tight quarters than standard shotguns.

They're not useful for retarded shit like more spread. They have more spread than standard shotguns but that doesn't matter in the kind of situations that a short barrel shotgun would be useful. If you have no guns and only have $100 to spend a short barrel shotgun would be desirable if they were legal. They would be that cheap if they were legal.

However, pistols are vastly superior in the kinds of situations a short barrel shotgun would be useful in.
