The problem is that IRC is dead and the only people still there are the holdouts. It's a lot like torrenting--the pool of interested parties grows smaller each year, and eventually it will just be a tiny group of enthusiasts. The difference is that with torrenting you are actually acquiring something, while the entire point of IRC is social interaction (or botnet herding), so you really just have society's and even the Internet's leftovers, and this double filter leaves mostly losers with ego problems in my experience

the thing about chat rooms is you have to have someone you trust to not log IPs. Why would you give a moderator your IP? It's about being anonymous in this day and age- being a to browse sites with old browsers and strict security settings should still allow the chat room to work.
