That's one of the reasons. The main 2 are high taxes and tons of regulation. Think about US shale production (pic related) and how this production would have been severely restricted in Europe. Now we're exporting this Shale to those retards. Socialism and big government destroys all incentives.
Gasoline is taxed at 60% (at least in France). The liter of gasoline is arround 1.5$ in gallon it would be 5.7$ a gallon. They want to increase it even more (+6cent per liter). The worst about that is that it touch mostly the people living in countryside or in suburb, that's why those people are rioting now

France's trade-union driven economic inertia, welfarism, and bureaucracy do not help it economically. Do not make it as competitive or innovative as they could otherwise be.
