I read a dossier in a french newspaper a few years back with testimonies of people with useless jobs and it's staggering. I learned the hard way from my internships that you have to look busy at any cost. In an office you're there for 9 hours but get 4 hours of work. If you don't milk the clock management gets pissed and sees you as lazy. So moral of the story is work in slow mo, milk the bathroom as long as possible, talk to people, just don't look idle because the second you do you can be fired.

All of the automation stuff only actually works because some developer spent 4 hours figuring out the precise interactions between four different versions of python on their machine (for example). Or why some API call works in Android 7.1.1 but not 7.1.2. Etc. Ultimately the problem is that computers cannot understand human context when you ask them to do something. So you have to be very, very precise. And what is do we call "very precise instructions given to a computer?" Programming.

Open source libraries and code reuse are a thing. At this point finding the data to train a neural net is more challenging than writing the code for it.

In some situations the data is more valuable, yes, that doesn't make the training trivial. Even if it were, you probably at that point have unscalable spaghetti python code written by a statistician. That needs to be cleaned up, rewritten in a real language, parallelized, hardened, secured, deployed and maintained.

Technologies to make automation at this point still spawn enormous supply chains, in order to make and operate those stores requires more work than a normal store at this point, even if you dont see people stocking the shelves etc.

Eventually yes we will have robots doing everything and we will be in a post scarcity society but that is a VERY VERY VERY long way off possibly centuries (or more) For now the process alone of automating and all of the subcontractors, and manufacturers and financing and maintenance etc etc will require more people overall than the jobs lost due to that automation.

And when we do get to a point where nothing needs to be done by humans and live in absolute abundance our current concerns about wages and home prices and shit will be irrelevant, that economic world will be more different to us than bronze age palace based economies.

There will always be staff. I have worked in automation and instrumentation for 5 years (doing MSc now). You still need techs and engineers we are no where close to having the machines repair themselves.

That said people with IQs < 90 are going to be completely fucked soon. Typical Mexican jobs such as fruit and vegetable sorting and picking are going away soon.
