in the USA, it's 100% legal to by spores. it's 100% legal to buy premade bags with growing substrate and innoculation port. it's extremely easy to order this stuff and there are tutorials all over the internet. it's a lot easier than messing with chemicals.

literally anyone can grow their own personal use shrooms cheaply and efficiently. Pickard had extremely high end machinery for production, something very few have access to. buying tabs from strangers these days is asking for trouble. you don't know if it's LSD, a 2c-, some new RC, fentanyl laced, or just absolutely nothing.
all the money he spent on warehouses/labs/equipment would buy a huge place to grow shrooms. yeah it takes a lot longer, yeah there's a difference in yield [nanogram doses vs miligrams] but a single person with time and resources could produce an enormous amount of isolated psilocin/psilocybin.

I don't really have a sense of how much they might be tracking that specifically since the spores are legal to purchase and grow and are not an uncommon entry point toward growing mushrooms, whether for food or hobby.
But if you're worried about a clearance, I'd steer clear, especially with more and more big data approaches being used and more knowledge graph mining and things like that. Maybe you could get a friend to buy them for you, but then you might have to worry about him being asked an inconvenient question about you if they decide to interview him during a background check.
