The skyline provided by the twin towers was pretty iconic, at least locally. If they'd had blown up the Trump tower, sure that would have been a big famous building, but they wouldn't have to redesign the skyline outline used everywhere that shows the Twin Towers, and if you were in the area, the unbelievable reality of it wouldn't hit you ever time you drove in and saw the big gaping hole in the skyline.
