2. Senators were picked by the state legislature not the people
3. Electoral college
4. Only white land owners could originally vote because most people are stupid
5. Each State was intended to act a mini nation. They could almost anything they wanted provided they did not restrict rights gurenteed by the federal constitution. They needed to keep trade and commerce between them free and they depend on the federal government for defence and joint foreign negotiation.

The key point missed by people is how big number 5 is. This is where the genius of the system comes into play. Each state could essentially experiment on its own. If something worked it could spread to other states. If it failed it would be contained. Follow some simple rules and they could do what they want.

First if the Republican platform is untenable in the future they can always go back to the drawing board.

Second the death of the Republicans because of immigration of non-whites has been predicted for a long time. Problem is as immigrants spend more and more generations in the US their interests start aligning with the whites and they start voting Republican more.
