They have such potential to be great for young men. However, they are often just upper middle class yuppie children with no sense of independence. Everyone that I personally know in them is generally insufferable, the rules are fucking retarded, and you have a lot of obligations that prevent you from doing things that matter, like, I dont know, study or work.

If they existed as something closer to a professional association per major, like a guild or something, great. Some do. Most are just social, and are founded on the idea that because you were in the same group, you will be hired or be given opportunities by graduated members of the fraternity.
