My company is based in San Francisco but I work in New York.

If you look a the map, Vermont and New Hampshire have grown. It is not a big leap to move from the north suburbs of Boston to southern New Hampshire. Some people like to move to Vermont as well.

Also Delaware and (Northern) Virginia are growing. These places are like any where else on the Boston-DC highway. Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill is similar to these cities. As is Atlanta. As is Florida. People move to all these places.

Insofar as California, I know people who move to Oregon and Washington. Look at rents in San Francisco or near San Francisco - its no wonder people move to Portland and Seattle.

Honestly, a lot of the people I know who move down south are not big earners. If you are not a white professional, it doesn't make much sense to pay New York city rents. New York is professionals, with many whites, and then a lot of non-whites. There aren't a lot of non-professional whites in New York - look at the old Italian neighborhoods in East Harlem, Little Italy, or near Arthur Avenue, they're mostly shrunk to one street with Italian restaurants.

As others said, New England and the Left Coast have been gradually strangling themselves with with heavy taxation and nanny state kosher town green politics. What oncemade these regions has faded.
