Is there anything really wrong with a grown man (read: me) playing video games for most of the day?

how do you get money to pay for bills?

Do you get more money from the govt. than you give in taxes? If not, it's fine

I have a full time job, financially independent for the most part.
I don't (and pretty much refuse to) get government assistance.

Depends on whether you're productive during the time not spent on vidya.

I think what's wrong is the lack of control you have over your life when you spend most of the day playing video games. There's no effort that has to be put into it. And nothing ever comes out of taking the easiest path in life.

Not really, but it's the same end if I'm not playing games. I'll just be bored instead.
I'm pretty much complacent. I mean, I'm single and pretty much a "loser" by society's standards, but with my personality the way that it is, I wouldn't have it any other way. Vidya just helps pass the time and, as pathetic as it sounds, actually give me a reason to keep breathing.

Life is big and expansive and wonderful, and if you hole up inside doing *anything* you're missing out on a lot.

Enjoy your games, but maybe look for a balance.

No joke Hank is a god to me. I wish I could implement the things he says into my life, but I simply do not care enough.

Also there is nothing that I want.

If You have a full time job, what does it matter if you play video gamea all day?

You work a 9 to 5 job and pay your taxes.

If You feel unfufilled, thats another story entirely

Well said, this. The problem with video games is that it's a huge waste of time.

If you're an avid video gamer, you're not any worse off than the person who wastes their time watching TV, getting wasted at the bar, or whatever. But there's so much other stuff you could be doing. With that time, you could develop yourself as an artist. You could learn a new skill and develop a new career or business. You could become a world class athlete.

One day you're going to get really sick, and a doctor will tell you you have a couple weeks to live. The first thing you're going to think about is whether or not you spent your life well. If you developed yourself into the person you want to be, and you make the life you want for yourself, then you'll reason that you did. If you waste it on things that are fun, but don't really make you happy, then your stomach will sink and you'll feel a hole in your chest.

As people get more and more sucked into digital media, I suspect more and more of them find themselves with that hole.

The only thing wrong with it is that you're wasting time that could be spent exploring the world and experiencing things. Life is too short.

You may feel content, but getting out and having a social life is also good. You need to find a middle ground. Excercise, socialise and just enjoy your life. You only get one.

The only thing wrong with that is I don't really know what's out there. Or what I want to do.

Missing out on what?

If someone played Tennis all day, everyday when they were out of work. You wouldn’t say that person is missing out. It’s just because he’s playing video games that people say this

No, no I wouldn't.

Just read through a couple of posts and noticed you do have a job. There is nothing wrong with it IMO, so long as you get your daily exercise and calorie intake. Wake up, go to work, go to gym afterwards, and then have a nice meal to settle you in for a long gaming session. Repeat. ????. Profit.

Stay clean. Stay fit. Stay happy.

This

I’ve done carribean cruises, backpacked across Europe, road tripled America

All that shit is pretty meh in comparison to those all night call of duty s&d sessions I used to have with my friends. That was life well spent

there is nothing wrong with the video games he is playing but its the fact that he plays the video games to excess that is the problem such as would be if he spent whole day doing anything else in excess i urge you to find more hobbies or even a part or full time job if your unemployed it will boost your self worth and help with mental ailments such as depression or anxiety like i had when i was a neet good luck to you user in your quest in life.

>The only thing wrong with it is that you're wasting time that could be spent exploring the world and experiencing things. Life is too short.

Exploring the world? From when? 6PM to 10PM when he has to go to bed?

My problem isn't that you play video games, it's that it is compensation for giving so much of your time to make someone else money.

Why don't you find a way to make money from playing video games? Like youtube or twitch or something?

>more hobbies
I tried cycling but that just makes my ass and neck sore. I'd think about kayaking but I've already spent so much money lately I'd feel bad dropping another $500 on something I dont need.
>I don't have a particularly "likeable" personality, plus I'm not super good at them. I also haven't paid attention to games since like 2011, so there isn't anything I know that the average person on twitch doesn't already know.

Idk man, I'm ok with the way things are now. It's just that I need something to fill my spare time, and I don't really seem to like anything else. But I still feel irresponsible and kind of immature wasting so much of my time on such a meaningless activity. It just makes me kind of uneasy and weirdly guilty.

Whoops meant to quote you on this:
>Why don't you find a way to make money from playing video games? Like youtube or twitch or something?

Sometimes I wish we had an edit button.

If that tennis player was spending all day, everyday playing tennis in one room, never using it to go out and explore the world, then yes, I would say he was missing out.

If he was a pro tennis player and got to travel, meet people, and do stuff, then he wouldn't be missing out. Same goes for video games - if you're a pro vidya player and you use it to play in huge tournaments in Seoul, then you're not missing out. But if you're wasting all your time in a dark room, then yes, you're missing out.

Ask yourself: is it enhancing your life, or taking away from it?

if youre surviving, its fine

Ive learned a lot from video games

cod4 I learned violent chess from search and destroy. I learned the strategies to win and that is to take high risks by raiding first. being a wimp and camping will make you lose in the game and in life. I also learned the value of teamwork. A team of average players with great cohesion via microphones, fireteam tactics(sniper + 4 person fireteam) and dead silence will beat a team of good individuals nine times out of ten

dark souls gave me the confidence to keep going when everything seems impossible. you can rank up health, strength, magic, etc and you learn that you should only rank one up highly if you want to beat the game. a "jack of all trades" gets rekt in later bosses. this applies in real life: pick something your good at, enjoy doing and people want and get really good at that
