As someone who worked for a solar company, the technology isn't there yet. The majority of the major solar companies for example Sunnova and SunRun which help finance or lease solar panels for people require the solar panels to be tied into your local power/utility company. If for any reason any strings of your panels go out or during times with weak sun power you are then back on the old way of receiving power. It's rather unaffordable and difficult to live off the grid so to speak with solar power. Plus the materials needed to create the panels, along with all the trees we had to chop down to make the panels more efficient is hardly green.

The batteries used to store power can only run a few small outlets at a time maximum. You'll be able to maybe power some medical equipment or your computer for a little while but the majority of residential solar still requires you to be tied into the grid of your local utility company. If their power goes out, so does yours.
