Best thing that Trump can do now is simply declare that he won't run for re-election. That would do the following:

* Absolutely freeze Dem investigations in the house: They won't be able to do anything significant before the 2020 prez campaign heats up.

* Allow congress to at least potentially be bipartisan again: Without the influence of Trump, moderate repubs will be free to be more bipartisan.

* Salvage legacy: Trump can state that he did it his way and walk away without an absolutely bruising re-election campaign with Mueller breathing down Trump's neck the entire time.

* Burn 2020 dem prez: As typical repubs, dem will need at least 2 years to clean up repub mess, if not more, making them look bad while repubs can claim that they were the 'bold, decisive' ones and that it's the dems forcing the ppl to eat their broccoli and go to bed on time (see: Bush & Obama, Bush & Clinton, even Ford & Carter).

* Burn dem 2020 down ticket: Depressing dem turnout would result if Trump was not on the ticket. Less dems voting equals less dem down ticket success.

In the end, if the repub party wants to mighty screw over dems in long term, just convince Trump not to run for re-election and then somehow engineer Ted Cruz to be repub candidate. Sure, repubs wouldn't be in office for at least 4 years but it would get repub bad press out of the headlines. Repub party is currently one of spoilers, not leaders.
