First thing you have to understand is that the circumstances that make a single father are USUALLY a lot different from the ones that make a single mother.
A single mother is usually made from two irresponsible people reproducing and then splitting. A single father is usually a widower, or his wife got a hold of recreational drugs while he was busy putting food on the table and started blowing a crack dealer. The guy isn't going to get custody barring extreme circumstances.
I know a single father who's probably WORSE than a single mother.

What really tickles my pickle is when my father proudly claims "I should be thanking God for having them as parents considering there's far worse out there".
