We have already seen GM lay-off workers, sure, but the real killer is likely to be increasing prices of goods while wages remain stagnant. At the end of the day, peoples' wallets are generally the deciding factor on satisfaction with current state of affairs in politics. As even conservatives continue to attack Trump's tariffs, if the worst comes of them, it will be difficult for the party to rally around the economic end of Trump's re-election campaign. A lot rides on how long Trump is willing to play the tariff game.

I would caution about this line of thinking as Democrats had double the amount of seats on the line for this past election than Republicans did. In 2020, more Republican seats will be up for re-election. That 2 seats were gained is an oddity, sure, but not necessarily indicative of anything.
