Automation and the future of blue-collar jobs

Automation is getting more cost effective and will only grow in use. What's going to happen when even more people are put out of when they're replaced by automation? For example There's 3.5 million truckers employed in the USA and it's speculated we'll see fully autonomous cars by 2020-2021. What's going to happen these people? What's going to happen to all the other people in other industries with similar future prospects? Realistically speaking not every job is going to be replaced over-night but we're still talking about millions of Americans needing re-training to find jobs right? How is this not a bigger talking point?

>Re-training
It's your fault if you're useless, not anybody else's

Don't know, don't care.
t. Automation engineer in the making

TCM (total quality managment) isn't going to fix it.

You guys are going to be so fucked after I stopped designing the AI for you and now you need somebody to change a tire. Go ahead. Make a robot that changes a tire. Meanwhile you can keep a coven of lawyers employed to get off scott free.

I'm not talking about who's fault it is. The fact still remains that there's going to be a lot more unemployed people who are either too dumb or too old to be quickly re-trained and they're going to be desperate and pissed off. Lots of desperate pissed off people make for a less than stable society. Shit got ugly last time rural jobs were lost to industrialization.

>t. Automation engineer in the making
Good for you. Wise choice.
>Don't know
I don't either which is the point of the thread.
>don't care
Unless you're wealthy enough to wall yourself away from a growing population of angry and desperate people you might want to care.

Mi,lions will have no purpose in the coming years. We will not be able to afford these folks as well as the traditional welfare cases. Sterilization and euthanasia are the answers to this problem.

Time to put on a yellow vest.

Law is going to be done by AI not long after trucking, its essentially just filling papers and looking for precedent within case law

>Quality
>C
Missing a few braincells there champ.

We need to tax the machines instead of the workers. Then we can also afford a basic income

Remember how the market is supposed to be really good at all that stuff they talk about on the TV?

>allocating capital
>responding to shocks in demand
>creating 16 different types of cereal out of the same 3 ingredients and food coloring

Prepare for the century of the shit the market is really bad at dealing with.

The market for truckers is a great example. As everyone with a brain knows, there will not be "Truckers" in the future. We don't know if they will be gone by 2020 or by 2030, or if maybe they will never be done away with. Perphaps we will still have truckers, but they will not even need licenses and will be paid minimum wage to press a big emergency stop button while a machine dictates their sleep schedule. But regardless everyone seems to agree that trucking is not a promising career path. Heres how that plays out in most economic models:
>people see tech companies saying robo truckers by 2030
>Less people want to be truckers
>Supply of truckers goes down
>price to hire a trucker goes up
>value of replacing your trucking workforce with robots increases
>Investors put more money into developing robo trucks faster since future profit has increased
>people see that companies now say with new funding robo trucks will be done by 2025
>less people want to be truckers
>supply of truckers goes down
>repeat infinity until starting salaries for truckers in the last 6 months before robo-truck release is 250k per year
>within 6 more months it will be down to the approximately the cost of the cheapest robo-truck
>competing companies make robo-trucks cheaper
>wages drop below levels in comparative industries
>Trucking dies as a job

Well, it's either free gibs or civil war.

The point is that over the the market will make tiny gradual changes until suddenly it goes exponential! We will see truckers become the highest paid job out for HS grads at the same time that total trucking workforce numbers are plumeting. It will go faster and faster until in the last 2 years almost 2million people will lose their jobs. New markets will eventually form to sop up that excess labor, but not on the same exponential timeframe.

Its tragic, because even you OP can tell that this will be terrible and that something should be done. You can even come up with a pretty smart plan in about 30 minutes that would deal with 90% of the problem
>Just fund a giant training program BEFORE the people become unemployed

But thats not how the market works. The market is just many individuals responding to things that effect them directly, but it doesnt respond to things that you can't quantify and cant force some one to pay the bill for.

You know that having 2million people unemployed is bad for society, but can you directly tell me how it will affect you if you don't work in trucking? How much would you individually be willing to pay to make sure the people get taken care of?

Now this same problem will happen over and over and over again.
>Climate change
>Automation
>migration
>housing crisis
>age crisis

All these problems have the same few traits that make it impossible for markets to solve them but are also impossible for markets not to inevitably cause.

They are decentralized, revolutionary, fast, and irreversible.

Welcome to the century where capitalism ruins everything. And to why no one ever talks about it, well we are talking about it. All the time, but we only talk about the symptoms and not the disease.

t. econ PHD student.

I’d be for this if it made prices drop, but you just know they won’t. We need to pop these tires at every damn red light they stop at.

That’s why we have laws and incels. If we can’t make congress protect valuable workers, we get the incels to sabotage these trucks on the daily. Also if we must have automated jobs I say we have automated elected officials. See how they like it.

>If slash the tires of the self-driving truck
Good luck getting away with that. They are literally covered in cameras and sensors.

The real massive wave of automation will first come from white collar jobs. Buy chainlink right now.

>Law is going to be done by AI not long after trucking
Yup

itunes.apple.com/app/id1427999657

you still don't have autonomous trains but you think you will have autonomous TRUCKS in just 2 years lol

>end migration into the country
It’s a really simple fix.

OP you obviously have a very layman grasp on automation if you think automated big rigs will be running by 2021 lmao. Especially with no driver. But once jobs like trucking are gone expect drug and violent crime to sky rocket. I used to work in recruiting for a trucking company, lot of veterans and low income people if all race work in trucking, groups you dont want unemployed.

>new markets will form to sop up the labor

Why do you think that?

Go smoke another one, Rogan.

Cars will be automated before trucks

Human cars + robot trucks

vs

Human trucks + robot cars

The later is safer

why the hell you have so large trucks ?

this is the size of the average european truck.
