In my country there are lots and lots of private colleges competing with each other and handing out diplomas, and the prices are being lowered. Meanwhile only richies and the very smart can go to public colleges due to the ridiculously hard admission exam. On a side note, each public college student costs about 3-5x times more than a private student

As an American tax payer who is putting three kids through college I approve of this since they are getting a better education and it’s costing me LESS than it would in those supposed free education countries.

Using the same $40,000 income, that puts you in a 22% tax bracket here

Together $131,200 BUT college expenses are tax deductible.
If 4 year gross income was $160,000 and $35,200 went to tax, $124,800 is left over.
Working with $75,000 over 4 years = $18,750 a year, maybe $10,000 of it is deductible, so we have a $40,000 credit
==$84,800
And tax that at 22%
$18,656
Plus our original $75,000

Which is less than $96,000.

The thing about "free" education is that you offer education to only a small proportion of the population in order to keep costs low.

In United States you can actually go to college. Here most people just become NEET or end up working in McDonald's for the rest of their lives.

22% taxes owed for the period
=$26,400
Plus our $75,000
=$101,400
Compare to $96,000 with no expenses and a 60% tax rate even though I suspect the $75k figure includes meals and such and I don’t think that’s provided by the gov in the OP countries.
But ignoring that it is about $1,250 more per year, however, you pay that $75,000 one time versus a lifetime of high taxes
