I grew up in a community with lots of mormons and many went to my highschool and I was friends with many too. They were virtually all white, all high achievers in school, all very kind and moral with good families that cared for each other and tight communities that would look out for all their members. All of them went to college and achieved advanced degrees. Virtually all are now married with white babies and good jobs.

Also, awhile back there were many call centers established in Utah basically in the business of preying on old people. They were allowed to operate with an agreement that they would not target any Utah residents. I think the basic feeling is that screwing over outsiders for the benefit of your family/tribe is somewhat acceptable.

Whacky beliefs? Yes. Absolutely. Their religion is a strange flavor of Christians. Most of the weird shit is memed (magic underwear) because they do a lot of symbolic stuff. Book of Mormon is pretty based. They're taught to live a lifestyle that is very in line with Christian teachings and keeps you from bogging down your brain and potential with degeneracy.

Most are successful because of what I mentioned above. Polygamy isn't a thing anymore. I've heard two things regarding it, some Mormon towns were devoid of men because they died in the civil war so there was a temporary permission for polygamy to replenish numbers. Could be wrong but that's how I was taught. Once numbers were back up the Church officially condemned it but some Mormons didn't want to change so they split off.

Obviously not all of them will be worth it so you'll have to date around before you find the right one. But that's a good problem to have.
