Much like the Peloponnesian War, I believe the primary cause of the First World War to be phobos, fear. We can sit here and argue about resources, politics, empires, and influence, but at the end of the day it was fear. A fear of rivalry, a fear of dishonor. World War One marked the decline of the West, and rightly so. Just take a look at what we did to ourselves, and then we did it again 20 years later.

Germans overestimated themselves. They weren't even done assimilating all the Slavic lands they had already occupied, like Slovenia, Slovakia, etc. yet they wanted to occupy even more. We could've been friends if they stayed out of the Balkans, but they didn't so losing the world wars serves them right.

Germany by building up a fleet threatening the status quo, Austria by fighting the Serbs over worthless territory in the Balkans, and Hungary for failing to manage it's minorities.

There were plenty of opportunities to de-escalate before WW1 erupted but then they would miss the opportunity to annex some more land or reclaim territories lost in the 19th century. There was no fun or profit to be had in a purely defensive war, they needed to cause enough damage to claim some nice territorial prizes at the end of it. The Germans were drooling over the thought of annexing a huge chunk of Poland decades before Hitler came to power while every other european country had the same fantasies about redrawing the maps.

Trying to bring so deep and complex a cause down to the machinations of a few is not plausible. I'm not saying it didn't play a part; but the causes of the war run deep.

First of all is how the war started. The first act of war was carried out by Serbia. Just shooting a border war would be an act of war, but they murdered the leader of a neighboring country.

Today, some people like to draw attention from this and so they say that networks of alliances started. But the truth is somebody committed a first act of war, and that was Serbia.

They killed Achduke Ferdinand for their own territorial ambitions.

Interestingly, Britain, France, and the United States rewarded Serbia for starting the war, and creating Yugoslavia, which allowed them to oppress the Croatians and Slovenians.

The next question is why the war was kept going. During most wars they do a little bit of shooting and then they move a border post one way or the other. Why did millions have to die?

The reason is what the allies demanded for peace. We know that they wanted to execute German leaders (just like they at the end of WWII). Pretty difficult to obtain peace if you are demanding the execution of those who would have to agree to that peace. There were other demands, that I suspect amounted to a destruction of Germany and it's people, but we don't know exactly what they were.

The reason there was peace at all is because the Allies lied about the war through their propaganda, and produced documents assuring a fair peace for everyone including the Germans. The most notable of these documents was Wilson's 14 points with which everyone in Germany could agree with.

In Germany people became convinced that their government might be part of the problem, so they overthrew it and sued for peace. Then Germany was stuck with many little civil wars due to this revolution, and the German army was demobilized. During this period the Allies came up with the treaty of Versaille which Germany could not resist because of it's internal political situation.
