I would think that Northern Europeans would have slightly larger brain due to being naturally larger in size, but it seems not to be the case. I'm not sure about a Neanderthal connection, but it's possible.

Southern Italians have more actual Ashkenazi and Sephardic DNA, but yes, the DNA relationship is more due to proximity and historical (Roman times and before) female converts to Judaism who then followed the greater Jewish diaspora in Central / Eastern Europe in later times.

That is only part of it, though large.
