Huh that's a new program that makes hm much more attractive in my opinion. I served in the sub force and our docs used the term independent duty often. The Navy is what you make it. If you get to your command and hate it, avoid adopting a fuck the Navy mentality as you will only be hurting yourself. If it's not for you just fulfill your contract and separate.

I'd just try and cross-rate to something I like the look of or cut my losses

From my experience cross rating is a meme as when I was in the Navy it required 24 months of service at your current command before it could be approved. That put most people I served with near contract completion and they were just ready to get out. Requirements may have changed though.

From what I've heard if you want to cross-rate to one of the multitude of ratings that are undermanned then they'll speed things up. I did decently on the ASVAB so I have plenty to choose from

Yeah the same concepts applied when I served it just wasn't as smooth a process as advertised by recruiters. I never was interested in cross rating but I had friends that attempted it. Granted most submarine rates were undermanned and they wouldn't have met the needs of the Navy by attempting to cross rate anyways.

You'd be surprised at how chill it is sometimes. While it is really organized and has certain customs and courtesies to follow at all times, there is a decent amount of freedom once you get out of basic training and MOS training.

Unfortunately they have softened of this, if anything they should be a lot more strict and dole out harsher punishments without endangering someones career. They do more paperwork than physical punishment nowadays. What I'm saying is BRING BACK TACTICAL HAZING!

you should research what sort of civilian or government job you want to do when you get out, and do that in the military so that you can transition easily fully certified and ready to get paid real money

try to get a job that requires a security clearance

under no circumstances go open general or join some retarded gun carrying MO unless you want to hate your life
