This is true, however life in Japan for foreigners and for Japanese is very different.
As a foreigner there is a difficult adjustment period but if you make it through that it is smooth sailing. You are not expected to abide by the strictest cultural obligations and most people will be friendly with you. If you can deal with lots of solitude and cope with the idiosyncrasies of Japanese culture then overall it is a pretty good place to live. Weather is shit though.

Guest houses are abundant. Central Tokyo you can find them for around ¥50k-70k a month. Go further out and they get much cheaper but the transport cost goes up as well. Then again English schools are everywhere so if you are willing to live a bit outside the city you can save more. Assuming you don't do a ton of partying and drinking and budget your money wisely I'd say ¥500,000 is a good, safe amount for 2 months. You could get by with less, just nice to have a buffer zone. Supermarkets are relatively cheap so cook or learn to cook. Don't go out to eat often, don't go to pubs and clubs, don't try to keep up with the Jones's.
Tourist visas are for 3 months. To get a job you have to find a company that will sponsor your work visa. I suggest buying a round-trip ticket with the departure 3 months after you arrive, that way if things do not work out at the very least you have a way home. You can find lots of gigs that pay under the table to supplement income.
It's almost 5 am and I need some sleep, good luck. Again if you really want to come here, and by that I mean live in modern Japan and not some weeb-fantasyland that doesn't exist, then research, save, come here and hit the ground running. Have a guest house or apartment lined up through craigslist before arriving, maybe even a job. Get here and get a house, phone, job and visa. It is entirely in your power to do so.
