For me, I didn't care about politics at all until GamerGate. That was spark, for me at least, that got me interested in the growing alt-right scene. That got carried all the way to the 2016 nomination and has never really stopped, just evolved and morphed into the state Jow Forums is in now.
I got swept up in politics outside of my immediate interest or control, I feel like that's the case for a lot of younger people. The 2016 election was bigger than the super bowl in popularity and cultural relevance. Everything nowadays is drenched in politics. Just 4 years ago modern feminism was a purely tumblr meme. Now it's multiple steps beyond that, the biggest issues back then are so miniscule now. It's like Jow Forums has matured along with the gradual escalation of tensions in the west.
I'm in the game full speed at this point, there's no going back and ignoring it, it is what it is now.
