I read about half of The Gulag Archipelago before I got busy. Fascinating combination of history and literature, however embellished it might be. I'd like to finish it some day. It was good so far to get some background sense of the matter within which to later fit in more detailed analyses.
No opinion on his contribution to the collapse. I imagine it was popular enough to have some probably small impact in shifting public perception, but that's not a part of the collapse that I've been interested in looking in to.

I read all 3 volumes of the Gulag Archipelago and part of 200 Years Together. I'm generally a fan of his work and I think most fans of his don't really have a deep understanding of him.

Less than you think. By the 1980s he was ignored by Americans who were tired of his sermons and the KGB stopped harassing him because he was so marginalized. Inside the Soviet Union it might have been a different story.

Two Hundred Years Together doesn't even really name the jew. At least not in the way pol thinks it does. He basically says that both jews and gentiles were responsible for the crimes of the Soviets and that they should come together to accept that responsibility to heal and move on.
This above all else should be a big redpill. Because this message of reconciliation is completely rejected and all that is given are shouts of oy vey and antisemitism. It's a matter of record that he spent time in the Gulags of the U.S.S.R., so really that's not actually surprising that he would have anecdotes from that time. thing is, his numbers (60 million, last I checked) are just ridiculously stupid, (considering that Russia lost 22 million in their war against the nazi's, and had about 130 million. He proposes that Stalin gulag'd almost half of fucking Russia) as is his account of 'the great terror', considering it's also a matter of record that the vast majority of people arrested during the Moscow trials were actually top officials, who were officially accused of treason. Further compounding this is that A.) census data shows no proof of mass deaths that number anywhere near 10 million after WW2 in the U.S.S.R., and B.) the 'great terror' lasted a very short amount of time (all told, about 2-3 years). and C.) the Gulags during peace time had a death rate of about 3-5% and 15-ish% during WW2. Hardly the unimaginable hellscape it would have had to have been in order for the Gulag Archipelago to have any merit.
Now if you want an actual hellscape of a prison, look no further than French Guianna from around the same time period.

1000 pages is a lot to take in all at once. I find it's good to break it up a little to provide time to mull it over as long as you don't fragment it into losing continuity.
I did a 750 page book reading it while I ate lunch each day at work and it done in, I don't know the time it takes to change from one season to the next. It was book of facts and evidence, though, so there's not as much continuity to have to worry about beyond the basic structure of the arguments and their presentation.
