As someone who’s extensively researched the Russian military and has inside knowledge of how the US military works, I can almost guarantee the US will lose a major conflict against Russia alone, let alone with China, Iran, and North Korea involved. The US military is too incompetent, incorrectly trained, and equipped to fight a conventional war. Considering we’ve replaced artillery with airpower, the sole enabler of the maneuver elements on the ground, we’re fucked if we have to fight Russia with a hodgepodge of far more incompetent and poorly equipped European militaries, particularly the Germans and Poles. The Rand corporation has an excellent study of the Baltic scenario, the most likely we are to see. We’d fare far worse than the Germans on the Eastern front ever did.

Once you drop the 82nd and whatever other RRF we have, and combine it with garrison forces in Europe, you still dont have a lot of heavy equipment on hand. A carrier battle group is at least a week away, more likely two. Airlifting tanks is slow. And like you stated, NATO European forces are a hodgepodge, some good, some ill equipped.

That being said, I think you're discounting air power too much. US airpower is pretty fucking great at demolishing conventional units, especially mechanized and armored.

Iraq and Russia are two entirely different beasts to tackle. The Iraqis were horribly incompetent at even basic military tasks. I entirely dismiss the Iraq war as a valid comparison to a war with Russia. S-400s and soon to be S-500s combined with other systems such as MANPADS, Pantsirs, and intermediate ranged anti aircraft systems are much more of a threat than incompetent sand people with antiquated technology.

I don't think so, Finland doesen't have any quarrel with Russia regardless of the government form. I think we have better relations with them than we do with Sweden even though nothing is wrong with Fin - Swe relations either. We may have sanctions on Russia together with EU but that's what I think myself.
