I really like my Essential phone. I got it for a great price and couldn't give a shit less about the camera. I hope by some miracle they pull through.

The thing I wonder about is transmission of data when connected to the internet. Why can't that be carefully monitored on a smartphone? All the fucking time the internet auto-download/uploads """something""" in the background once I connect to a network. No way to restrict it. Force quitting the app reactivates it immediately. Facebook downloaded like 50MB today in the background. I only know because I have a menu-bar bandwidth visualiser and a data monitor app to analyse large downloads. This is absurd. Some of us have limited internet bandwidth and don't need it spent on rubbish.

No it won't. There's noise-cancelling software that captures the frequency response 'profile' of the audio so even the tiniest compressions and rarefactions picked up even with layers of duct tape, so they can boost the signal by an insane amount and eliminate the signal-to-noise ratio problem and isolate intelligible speech.

Taping the camera works, but taping the microphone won't work, they're small holes with the piezoelectric transducer recessed, if they were targeting an individual they could simply cross-reference the compressions and rarefactions of the tape offset from the normal frequency response of an untaped mic.
