It's a conspiracy to enrich the automobile and oil companies. They drop the price of gas to entice everyone to buy huge vehicles with poor fuel economy. Once a significant portion of the country has bought new gas guzzling vehicles, the price will shoot back up, making the oil companies huge profits. The car companies will make a profit both on selling the "It's got a Hemi!" vehicles and then again selling a bunch of econoboxes.

I have wondered this myself. A barrel of oil is 42 gallons. Current crude price is about $55. At $2/ gallon of gas the max profit is only $31, assuming gasoline is at least as valuable as crude. The lowest price gas could possibly be is around $1.35. If crude goes back up to $100/barrel gas would have to go up to at least $2.45
