War was partly started because brits were paying natives to raid us. Said native alliance was destroyed, but I agree that we shouldn't count it as a win overall. Surprised it's even really viewed "positively" since it was a notably unpopular war for the most part.

The commanders, naval forces and regular soldiers where brits. There was Canadian militia too but remember at this point they are Brits who live in Canada.

Also note that another reason for the war (and possibly the main one) was manifest destiny and the aim to push all European influence out of the North American continent. These where intentionally forgotten after the fact so you could spin the lie that it was a war the US won.

New Orleans had no impact on the course of the war but was useful in improving US moral after an almost never-ending series of defeats (against usually numerically inferior forces)

More to the point of opps topic, during the war of 1812 it was literally anglos v anglos. Large migration had yet to take place. The forces fighting each other would have been almost indistinguishable by appearance, culture or accent.

Important to also realise that some RN sailors would go AWOL and then just say that they were American, and that sailors in general could just say they were American to try and escape being impressed. There really wouldn't have been anyway to tell who was or wasn't actually American. This does not excuse impressment of US sailors but does show that it was an understandable policy considering the UK was busy fighting Napoleon.
